Psycho-paths : Cycle Paths for the Insane

61

By Drwibble

As a cyclist, I detest cycle lanes. It's not the concept of having a dedicated, safe area away from speeding traffic which I have any negative feeling against. It's just that cycle lanes are clearly designed and constructed by insane people in the local council. I have a theory that when we closed down the mental health homes in the UK to opt for care in the community based approach, I think they all took up residency in the local traffic and planning offices across the country.

Below are some of the examples of cycle lane insanity in the UK.

Incredible! This is a work of art Sir! I just have one question - in the fourth picture from the bottom- are you supposed to dismount?

I have seen quite a bit of lunacy with cycling paths and sidewalks. Thanks Drwibble. Please do more hubs on the cycling paths. This is art!

In theory yes you should dismount at each section at it's a junction to a side road or someones drive. This is why these designs of cycle paths don't work and go unused, as the planners don't seem to understand that when cycling you want to maintain a steady momentum.

I don´t know if it´s supposed to laugh or cry...

Here in Portugal we are still starting building cycle lanes, I personally prefer eco lanes (made without asphalt or cement) built away from cars and traffic. Nothing like travel through nature :)

Even though we are still in the beginning I already saw examples like the ones in this hub... I guess we also have insane people taking care of it :D

I think the trouble is that a lot of the cycle paths are implemented by people who don't cycle or they just try to fit them in to tick a box. I don't think the eco lane approach will last long with the UK weather, however we do have an excellent canal network which is brilliant for cycling along. It gets you away from the traffic and as the canal network was designed to move goods from city to city, they provide a green corridor into town.

I'm not a cyclist, and you might even count me among those motorists who get their feathers ruffled by just the idea that cyclists should share a motorway. However, I had an ear-to-ear smile looking at these pictures. No wonder cyclists don't want to use the paths designed for them! The Russian roulette path is priceless, as is your title.

Trust me, us cyclists try to avoid busy main road traffic if at all possible, we know who will come off worse in an accident.

I am glad you took the time to look at the photos and captions. They still make me smile looking at them again.

LOL! That is totally insane alright! What are they thinking when they are all gathered around the big table deciding to put the cycle lanes out there? Obviously they are NOT cycle friendly :(
