How to clean a Katadyn water filter and keep it clean

As with all things in life, if you take good care of your katadyn water filter, they will last a lifetime. One useful tip to extend the life of the filter element is to ensure that is is completely dry before it is stored for an extended time period. Katadyn recommends to adequately dry the katadyn water filter element for up to 3 days before putting it back in the filter.

If you have not adhered to drying the katadyn microfilter element before long term storage and it has developed a foul odor, the recommended course of actions is to the pump around 1-2 liters of water with a little baking soda dissolved in it, through the filter. After you have done this then soak the katadyn ceramic element in baking soda water overnight. Rinse well and then pump several liters of clean water through the system

Cleaning a clogged katadyn cartridge - Unfortunately, more often than not this requires the fitting of a replacement katadyn filter. However, if you are outdoors and miles away from the nearest shop, a temporary solution is to remove the microfilter and rinse in some water. A word of caution, do not let the contaminated water enter the cartridge output. This strategy will usually give enough life for the duration of your trip.

Don't use your Katadyn filter in muddy water - Portable microfilter water systems are specifically designed to treat contaminated water and make it safe. They are not designed to make dirty, muddy water clean. This type of silty water will reduce microfilter element lifespan due to the dirt blocking all of the micro pores. To gain the maximum use out of your Katadyn microfilter, always use the best water source available. If you have no choice in using muddy water, wrap a disposable coffee filter or fine clothed bandanna around the intake prefilter, this will try to filter and capture out the worse of the dirt before it enters the katadyn filter. Where possible, wait for sediment to settle out and the water surface appears clear before attempting to filter, and when you do filter use the water from above the settled sediment.

That would be a great thing to have when hiking. You never know what may happen that could leave you in a situation where you didn't bring enough water with you, and your only source may be a natural one that you have no idea what kind of contaminants are floating around in the water. Having a filter with you will give you the peace of mind that you are prepared for anything.
